Have questions about the diaper you ordered? Give us a call at 888-332-2243, we'll be glad to help!
Here are some answers to some frequently asked questions:
- How many diapers do I need?
If you are using bumGenius One-Size exclusively, we recommend a minimum of 24 diapers.
If you are using the All-In-Ones, we recommend approximately twelve diapers per size. This may vary based on your child's wetting habits. Remember, wash
at least every other day and rotate your stash evenly.
- How do I use my bumGenius One-Size Cloth Diapers?
- Adjust the diaper sizing by choosing the right snap setting on the front of the diaper.
- Your diaper arrives
snapped down to the "small" setting, the bottom row of snaps.
- To use the "medium" setting, unsnap the diaper and resnap on the second row of snaps.
- To use the diaper on the "large" setting, fully unsnap the front of the diaper.
HELPFUL HINT:
For overnight use, consider stuffing with two inserts and setting the diaper to be one size larger than you would for daytime use.
- Adjust the insert sizing by choosing the right snap setting on the insert.
- To use the insert as a "small",
snap the insert down to the bottom snap socket. Little boys tend to do well with the folded part towards the front of the diaper while little girls may do better with it towards the back.
- To use the insert as a "medium", snap the insert down to the middle snap socket.
- To use the insert as a "large", just leave it completely unsnapped.
- Put the insert in your diaper. Hold the insert in one hand and place inside the slot (located under the protective flap). Align the front edge
of the insert with the top edge of the velcro strip. Using one hand to hold the front of the insert in place, stretch the diaper and smooth the insert flat as you pull your other hand out of the diaper.
HELPFUL HINT: Many parents prefer to pre-stuff their diapers at the end of their washing routine.
- Put the diaper on your baby. bumGenius One-Size Cloth Diapers go on just like a disposable diaper.
- How can I tell if the diaper is adjusted to fit my baby properly?
To observe fit, pick up your baby’s legs after putting the diaper on and observe how it fits around the legs and bottom.
Is it snug? If so, good. However, if you can see “air” between the diaper and their skin, then you need to refine the fit.
Trying a smaller snap setting and fasten the tabs snugly. When you child stands up, notice how the insert or soaker is positioned
relative to the back elastic. If the insert or soaker is higher than the back elastic, lay your child down, release the tabs, pull the diaper
slightly towards the front and refasten the tabs.
- What is the difference between the fleece and the suedecloth linings?
We've found that some customers prefer fleece and others prefer the suedecloth lining. Both fabrics wick moisture away from your
baby's bottom. The fabric content is identical, the difference is the way it is finished.
If you aren't sure, try one of each! Currently, fleece lined bumGenius One Size Cloth Diapers are only available at Cotton Babies.
- I'd like to buy bumGenius! Where can I get this brand?
bumGenius! products are available in baby retail stores all over the world. If you don't happen to have a store
that carries bumGenius in your area, be sure to let them know about us! You're also always able to shop online through
one of our retailers.
- How do I wash my new diapers?
- For bumGenius 2.0 products (made with PUL outer):
- Wash once in cold water with no more than 1/4 cup detergent.
- Wash once in warm or hot water with more more than 1/4 cup detergent. Optionally (and only occasionally), add 1/4 cup of bleach to this cycle.
- Add an extra rinse to remove any lingering detergent in the diapers.
- Tumble dry on the medium setting.
- For bumGenius 1.0 products (made with nylon outer):
- Wash once in COLD water with no more than 1/4 cup detergent.
- Wash once in WARM water with more more than 1/4 cup detergent.
- Add an extra rinse to remove any lingering detergent in the diapers.
- Line dry.
- What detergent can I use?
You should only use detergents that are free of dyes, enzymes, perfumes, whiteners and brighteners.
Using detergents containing these ingredients will cause damage to your diaper including elastic failure and leaking.
- What should I avoid?
Do not use extra additives in your wash (like baking soda or vinegar). These ingredients are unnecessary and will cause problems in your diapers. Do not use fabric softeners.
- My tabs aren't as sticky as they used to be. How can I solve this problem?
Wash your diaper and then dry it in the dryer on medium heat.
Be sure to let the diaper cool completely before using. This causes the hooks to recontract and become "sticky" again.
- Are diaper rash creams ok to use with bumGenius?
Diaper rashes should be treated according to your physician's recommendations.
If you need to use a rash cream, you should use a flushable liner or a piece of fleece between your baby's bottom and the diaper
to prevent the cream from transferring onto the diapers.
- How can I prevent diaper leakage?
The number one cause of leakage is a saturated diaper that just needs to be changed. Any diaper
will leak once full. If your baby is having problems with leaks, check this first. 99% of the time, additional absorbency solves leakage problems.
If that doesn't work, we've included some other trouble-shooting points below.
- Did you prewash?
First of all, make sure that you washed everything at least once before using. There can be residue left on the fabric from the production process that can cause leakage.
- Is the insert flat?
Make sure that the insert is FLAT when you put the diaper on your baby. If it is twisted or wadded up, this can cause leakage.
If your baby's build causes the insert to bunch up, consider using a Hemp Diaper Doubler on top of your insert. This helps to prevent
the wadding that can occur with some builds.
- Is the wetness at the top edge of the diaper?
If the wetness is at the top edge of the diaper, make sure that the insert isn’t pushing the lining fabric up against your baby’s clothing.
The insert should be placed approximately one inch below the top edge of the diaper. The top edge of the diaper should be flat against your baby with the soft fabric against your baby’s belly.
- Is the wetness at the legs or the tabs?
If the diaper is leaking from the tabs or the legs, change the diaper and remove the insert. If it is saturated then your baby
definitely needs a more absorbent insert or a more frequent diaper change. If the insert isn’t saturated, then the diaper may not be
adjusted to fit your child properly or, if you are using a detergent that contains additives, your diapers may also have detergent buildup which
can cause leakage. Do not use contoured inserts with bumGenius One-Size Cloth Diapers.
- I think my diapers have detergent buildup. What should I do?
Wash your diapers once with approximately one tablespoon of liquid Dawn (the dishwashing detergent). Rinse until you don't see anymore suds. Then dry your diapers in the dryer on medium heat.
